Junior Verbally Commits to Play Lacrosse

Mallory Mong, Staff Writer

College is one of the biggest decisions that students have to make. For some, it’s simple and easy to choose, but for others it is very difficult. For Junior Callie Eldred, her college decisions have already been made. Eldred verbally committed to Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri this January to play lacrosse.

“Verbally committing is a phone call with the coach [of Lindenwood] for an agreement to accept a scholarship opportunity athletically and academically,” Eldred said.

The fact that Eldred is has already decided on a college in her junior year of high school is very relieving for her. Her mind has been made up and she couldn’t be happier with her decision. Read More…

After  the Regional competition at Garnett, Kan. on Oct. 24 the boys cross country team will move on to State, beating out Yates Center by one point to take third place overall. Four of the team’s seven members finished in the top 20 with junior Luke Rovenstine finishing seventh, freshman Cooper Rovenstine finishing 12th, senior Peter Beikmann finishing 19th, and junior Jackson Vander Ark finishing 20th.

“When I found out I was going to state for third year in a row I was thrilled and extremely grateful,” Luke Rovenstine said. “Our team has put in a lot of work this year and to see them all cross the finish line was unbelievable.”

The Kansas City Christian girls varsity volleyball team traveled to Lyndon, Kan. and to play against Lyndon High School for their Sub-State game on Oct. 24. Despite their hopes to compete in State, the team did not win their matches.

The girls lost their first match 25 to 14 and their second match 25 to 16.

“I think we could have improved on our communication,” senior Kaitlyn Burns said. “We wanted to win so badly that we tried too hard and messed ourselves up.”

After the first match, the girls briefly rested and headed straight into their second match.

They began their second match on a better note but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Lyndon.

“I think we started doing better with covering the second match,” Burns said. “But overall I wasn’t pleased with the game. They were not a better team than us; we just beat ourselves.

Sub-State is a significant game for the girls volleyball team because it ultimately decides who goes to State.  Read More…

The girls tennis team competed at Harmon Park on Friday and Saturday, where Kansas City Christian hosted State tennis. Head coach Brian Miller and assistant coach Anne Stringfield led the team to state during their first year of coaching.

“They were prepared,” Miller said. “They reached their goals. They knew what I expected of them. Our new players determine the future, and double teams are all about chemistry.”

Freshman Emma Wheeler, sophomores Ryan Jantsch, Sophie Hill and Anna Vialle, along with juniors Callie Eldred and Alexis Termini, all qualified at Regionals at Harmon Park on Oct. 9. Every player on the team qualified; something that has never happened before.

“We got all six girls to state,” Miller said. “Regionals was just a by-product of state.”  Read More….

KCC alumna Lily Young, who graduated in 2012, was known for her positive spirit while at the school, a trait that is needed to motivate people to work hard in many aspects of life. Cross country is one of these areas. Young herself was on the team throughout high school and is now the assistant coach.

“It’s fun to see kids that ran for me now wanting to be involved in a leadership role,” head coach Lisa Cowan said.

In comparison to her previous assistants, Cowan is very excited to finally have a girl. “It’s nice to have a female,” Cowan said, “[who’s] able to run with and relate to the female runners.”

Since Young only graduated three years ago, she still very much remembers what running during this time was like, and she is very passionate about her work with the team now as she was back then.   Read More….
